Best Used Cars Under £10,000

Under £10,000 you can buy a genuinely good car — the trick is picking a model with cheap parts, sensible insurance and a strong reliability record, then buying the best example you can find rather than the newest one.

Small hatchbacks

The Volkswagen Polo, Ford Fiesta and Vauxhall Corsa are the obvious picks: cheap to insure, easy to park and simple to maintain. A 1.0 or 1.2 petrol is plenty for town driving and avoids the higher servicing costs of turbo diesels.

If you want something a bit more comfortable for longer runs, a Golf or Astra gives you more space for very little extra money at this budget.

Family cars and estates

A Skoda Octavia or Ford Focus estate is hard to beat for boot space per pound. Diesel versions make sense if you cover more than about 12,000 miles a year; otherwise stick with petrol.

Crossovers like the Nissan Qashqai and Kia Sportage are popular for the higher driving position, but check tyres and suspension carefully — they carry more weight and wear parts faster.

Buy the car, not the badge

At this budget, condition and history beat brand every time. A well-kept Corsa with a full history will cost you far less over three years than a tired premium saloon bought at the top of your budget.
